Baslow - 10th February

Post  Admin on Wed Oct 31, 2012 9:10 am

Sunday 10th February - Baslow
A really interesting walk that gives us a lot of what Derbyshire has to offer. Views, history and some surprises along the way with this one! Not only does the walk touch on parts of the Chatsworth Estate, but we will also visit the Wellington and Nelson monuments close to Baslow, and 'enjoy' a cliff top walk with a sheer drop below us, protected only by a rope! Expect some climbs and lots of mud too on this 7.5 mile walk which should take us around 5 hours to complete.

Details:-
Meet at the public car park in the centre of Baslow at 10.0 for 10.15 start.

I'm not sure about this. I'm scared of heights and the sheer drop protected only by a rope has already made my tummy wobble

It's about 10 yards long the bit where the rope is, and you'd have to be really unsteady on your feet to have a problem with it. Put it this way, we'd several people from Mencap last time we did it, and they had no problem!

I remember that walk cos I took some great photographs, but I don't remember the rope at all! Maybe I was too busy looking through the camera.

I also seem to remember a funny incident in the pub toilet!!! Laughing

The 'Toilet Incident' will be re-told on this walk rest assured!

There was also the hilarious sight of one of the Mencap carers, dressed in designer clothes and sunspecs trying to use his mobile on a banking and sliding half way to the bottom on his backside, losing both specs and mobile on his way!

Weather forecast for the area is for light snow during the morning, heavy snow after 5pm, so unless anybody thinks we ought to cancel the walk then it's still on.

A big well done to everybody who turned up today, you're all stars! Although we didn't quite get the views from up top the weather wasn't too bad at all, we've definitely had worse. The standing water was something else though, but it's always wet on Birchen Edge, even in summer so that was no big surprise.

Finally, a big thanks to Neil for leading the walk so well and for letting me test my knee on the gate we had to get over on the unscheduled bit Laughing

So glad the weather forecast didnt put us off walking today. Not walked this walk for four years and remembered certain parts as we came to them, and had forgotten how good a walk it was.As for the rope ladder, it was a piece of cake, in fact that easy thats why i couldnt remember it. A walk that we must repeat. Thanks Neil for leading.

So glad we ventured out today walking. Like Anne says, i've not done this walk for four years and had forgotten how good it was. The fog/mist hid the views from on high, but the walk was really enjoyable.

It was great to be able to chat everyone on the way round, and to get to know some people better. Well done to Steve and Dezon doing as much of the walk as they did, after the kneee op and feeling unwell.

Finally a big welcome to Cindy, I hope you enjoyed yourself and that we'll see you again.
