Three Cloughs - Sunday 15th June

Post  Admin on Sat Apr 05, 2014 7:46 am

Sunday 15th June - Three Cloughs!
Birchin Clough, Lady's Clough and Ashop Clough may be unfamiliar names, but they are all found on a 9.3 mile walk just up the Snake Pass from the Ladybower. Other unusual names on this walk include a path called Doctor's Gate, a section of the Pennine Way called Old Woman, and Snake Path, where common lizards are often found. Expect great views, moorland, a nature trail, a waterfall, wildlife and woodland on this challenging walk which climbs 300 metres altogether.

Details:
Meet at Birchin Clough Car Park on the A57, which is located in woodland at a bend in the road, around a mile NW of the Snake Pass Inn at 10.0 for 10.15 start.

You can either grab a lift with us, or follow us if we get someone carless needing a lift cos we'll be coming along Holme Lane. I'll let you know a little nearer the weekend if that's alright.

Afraid to say that I'm not familiar with the area either, I've only driven on the Snake Pass once in my life! However, I can't really see it being difficult to find. The road we need to be on is the A57, which is obviously the Snake Pass as it leaves Ladybower, and the meeting point is a car park situated a mile past The Snake Pass Inn, at a bend in the road.
So it's A57 out of town down to the lights at the Ladybower. Straight on at the lights towards Glossop. After 9/10 mins you'll see the Snake Pass Inn; a mile after that on the right in woodland on a bend is a pull in type of car park. This is where we're meeting. If you come out of the woods and reach open moorland, you've gone too far! Turn round and go back.

Hi Karen. We can pick you up at 9.10-9.15 if you like on Rivelin Valley Road at the junction with Watersmeet Road if that's ok.

A tough 9+ miler and we did it easy-peasy. I think that shows the standard we're at these days. Wasn't easy terrain though, and so much mud in June too - I think it's definitely not a winter walk this one if we do it again.

Don't mention midges though! What a pain they were at dinner time. Some of us sussed them out though by deciding to walk as we ate, which kept them at bay. Not quite sure what other people thought though if they saw us going round in circles all around a direction sign!

A nice drink at the Snake Pass Inn rounded off a lovely day.

The views today were amazing. This walk is a definite to do again even though there was so much mud and wet peat to slow us down it was fantastic.

As Steve says the midges were a nightmare. Jeans legs looked like a dot-to-dot picture by the end of the walk.

It was great to see the Grouse and her chicks running around in the undergrowth.

Really enjoyed this walk and very glad I went. Scenery was lovely and on a clear day I think we should venture up the hill to see the views from the top as they would be amazing (this time we decided not to bother because of the mist!)

This was a lovely walk with gorgeous Spring green dramatic scenery at the end. There were a few slips at times because the path kept disappearing but I loved how Archie was sent ahead like a mine seeker to find the best route! Thought we'd lost Jean to the peat bog on the Pennine Way at one point!
Lunch was over very quickly due to the midges nipping everywhere but the black brolly also seemed to fool them for me and Anne!
Then a lovely drink indoors to round off and .... I finally won the raffle! Thanks for a good day.

Very pleasant walk through lovely fragrant pine woods which had a magical quality in parts and some great spots for picnics. The midges didn't bother me too much. Always nice to relax in a pub afterwards.  thank
