Derwent Edge - Friday 13th December

Post  Steve M on Wed Dec 11, 2013 7:12 am

Derwent Edge, Friday 13th December
A 6/7 mile walk which is quite hilly to start with, but following a descent down to the Derwent reservoir, it's a nice easy flat return! This route is a bit rocky, and can get quite muddy, but the views from up above are well worth the effort.
Meeting point is the Ladybower Inn at 10.00, with parking available on the Ashopton viaduct nearby. Unfortunately there is no public transport for this one.

Steve, I think the bird of prey we saw was either a hobby or a young buzzard ? any ideas ?

According to my bird book a sparrowhawk is no more than 16" long and a hobby 13", and the bird we saw was longer than both of them I think. I've never seen a buzzard close up before, only flying in the distance, but my guess would be that that was what we saw. Great to see it whatever it was!

Are you sure it wasn't an Albatros ?
