Matlock - Sunday 6th October

Post  Admin on Sat Aug 17, 2013 9:22 am

Matlock - Sunday 6th October
The group's never done a walk in Matlock before, so here we go for a 10 miler that takes us from the centre of Matlock up towards Uppertown and then on to Darley Forest and the outskirts of Two Dales, before returning to the start along the River Derwent. The route can get muddy after rain and there no steep hills, just long and gentle climbs, according to the instructions!

Details:-
Meet at Matlock station car park at 10.00 for 10.15 start.

I'll be there for this one, and can offer lifts to people from around Netheredge and the city centre.

Steve and Archie,
Could you give me a lift on Sunday? If yes, where would it be best for you to pick me up? If not - no problem at all, I've checked and there are buses. I think Archie should still be counted because he is a real presence, he is what they now call a "non-human person." 98

I am writing this from my office, half-dead, which is very good. Some exercise is exactly what I needed. A special 'thank you' to Enid for the offer of the socks - I will make sure I wear my real hiking boots next time!!

That was quite a tough walk, but at least it finished with a nice, easy-going flat stretch.

Glad the shorts haven't been packed away yet for the winter, they were perfect for the lovely weather today - long may it continue!

Cheers to Neil for leading the walk, and well done to Natalia for winning the draw. If only I'd bought 2 tickets.......

Thanks for a lovely walk on a lovely day but oh dear I was pooped afterwards! All those tussocks I think!Sleep
I have looked up the Beans and Bacon mine cos it just sounds so out of place in Derbyshire ! Can't find much but is an English Heritage site number 29967 and that's about all I know. Would live to know why it has such a crazy name, unless thats what they mined lol!

As you say Debbie, there doesn't seem to be an explanation on the internet as to how the Beans and Bacon mine got it's name, but below is an article taken from Peakland Heritage which gives you an idea............

"Lead miners were superstitious and imaginative. The names of their mines were sometimes chosen for luck and sometimes for reasons we shall never know. Why ever would there be a Horse Buttocks Mine at Winster for instance?

Below are samples of some of the more unusually named mines:-
Bonsall Moor: Hang-worm, Beans and Bacon
Bradwell area:  Mule Spinner, Windy, New York, Hazard, Neverfear, Frog Hole
Brassington:  Perseverance, Innocence, Bees Nest, Bald Mare
Brushfield:  Lucky Ploughman
Castleton area:  Slitherstones, Odin Mine.
Chelmorton:  Daily Bread
Crich:  Merry Bird, Pig Trough, Wanton Legs
Cromford:  Good Luck
Elton:  Old Isaac’s Venture, Smiling Fancy
Eyam:  Ladywash
Hucklow:  Have-it-all
Matlock:  Jug Holes, Gentlewoman’s Pipe
Sheldon:  Warm-bath
Stoney Middleton:  Brandy Bottle, Cackle Mackle
Wirksworth:  Prince Charles, Stafford’s Dream, Boggard."

Re: Matlock - Sunday 6th October

What a great days walking in lovely weather, I swear it got warmer as the day went on. Glad all got sorted at the start re which walk we were doing, car parking fees, etc.

Cheers to everyone for their thanks, its a pleasure to help lead such a nice group of people round.

Third time lucky, I must say on this walk though, as the previous two times I've attempted it, I've gone off course after step 7 or 8, but then that's what can happen when a route has 59 steps.

It was lovely to see Matlock and the surrounding area from on high as we circled it, the views were fab, we could see for miles with the sky and weather being as clear and fine as it was. Those eagle eyed ones of us even saw Chatsworth House nestling in the hills in the distance at one point.

Cheers to Steve and Anne for helping out leading, the relaxing lunch stop at the suitably named Beans and Bacon Mine, along with a well earned drink at the pub, helped complete the day.

Thanks to Debbie for her company in the car there and back.
