Alport Castles - Sunday 18th August

Post  Steve M on Sun Jul 14, 2013 8:17 pm

Sunday 18th August - Alport Castles

Alport Castles is the site of the largest landslip in England, and this 8 mile walk takes us right on to the edge of a cliff which looks across and down at a series of towers from where Alport Castles got its name. To get to the castles we will be climbing up the side of the Derwent Valley through the little hamlet of Lockerbrook, and our return to the start will take us through Alport farm and via an old roman road. Expect this walk to take anything up to 5 and a half hours on paths that are quite stony, and across marshy paths that can get muddy after rain.

Details:-

Meet at Fairholmes car park, Derwent Ln, Nr Bamford S33 0AQ  at 10.00 for 10.15 start. All parking in this area is pay and display.‎

Hello! I am still away, but am coming back to Sheffield tomorrow evening, and yes, I am in for this walk! bounce bounce As always, it would be wonderful if somebody could maybe offer me a lift - but if not, I understand there are buses, and I can catch a bus.

Add me to the list please. Don't know where you live Natalia, but I'm at Woodseats, will be going on Abbey
Lane and then Ecclesall Road South, you're welcome to a lift if you're anywhere near there.

It's good of you to offer Chris, but I think Natalia is a lot nearer to us than you at Broomhill.

This was a tough walk with 2000 feet of climbing, and a lot of it on difficult stony ground too, but it's good to push yourself sometimes, and the views made it all the more worthwhile.

Hope the ladies who scoffed the free fruit don't get bellyache later Very Happy

That was a lovely walk, really enjoyed it, great views, refreshing (?!) paddle, free fruit (with enough to put on a few breakfasts). Thank you for leading Cherry and for doing the recce. Not quite so many as sometimes but then we had chance for a good chat with everyone. Thanks all Very Happy

And here's me thinking you were going to make a lovely raspberry dessert and bring it with you on the next walk !
Really enjoyable day with brilliant views and company. Would like to go in the twitchers shelter again and
hopefully see the resident Peregrine Falcons. Thanks for leading Cherry, sorry I missed you at the end.

Yeah, forgot to say earlier, thanks for leading Cherry, you did a great job.

Re the peregrine falcons, although they were a long way away, I'm convinced they were the ones we saw circling. I've seen them before and unlike kestrels there are usually 2 of them together, and they were huge affraid

Joining all the grateful voices - Cherry, Steve, it was beautiful, many thanks. My body is very grateful, too, after the exercise! And the fresh air...
