A Day at the Races - Saturday 17th August

Post  Steve M on Sun Apr 28, 2013 7:30 am

Saturday 17th August, Doncaster Races

Does anybody fancy a trip to Donny for a race meeting in August? The one on the 17th of August has 7 races starting at 1.30pm and going through until 5.00pm. There are quite a choice of sections to go in at the racecourse ranging from a waitress service restaurant ticket at £90 including a meal, down to a family members ticket at £7.
The 2 most suitable look like the Grandstand ones at £18, or the family enclosure one above at £7, but what does everybody prefer?
Another thing to consider is would people like to go by minibus? I can sort one out that would cost @ £12 per person if there were 17 people.

Footnote 7th May
Definite names down for this trip - Steve M, Andrea, Daz, Caz, Mark, Alison, Jean, Alan, Debbie  - 8 places left

(See lower down for full details)

Hya steve thanks for looking at this, I think the grandstand or family enclosure will do.
I have had a look at the Donny web site and asked a few lads at work theres no dress code for these areas and if its a nice day you can take a picnic into the family enclosure.
So we are looking at the cost:
grandstand+minibus for £30 each or family enclosed+minibus for £19 each
Me and Ali are ok with either option or if nobody fancies this as the dogs nite was brill value for money at £12.50 why not another nite at Owlerton.

See you in Wales. Smile

Good comments Mark, thanks for the input. Personally, I think we ought to leave "doing the dogs" again for a while otherwise it'll go a bit stale. A day at the races could be a great day out though, particularly if we make a full day of it.

The picnic idea sounds good. With an early start we could have that before the first race.

Another thought. How about calling in at a Wetherspoons somewhere after the meet to round the day off?

I've never been to the races so might like to do this. I think minibus is a good idea (as long as its not me driving) but we'd have to limit pick up points. Tea afterwards is good and could be planned depending on what's enroute. I prefer the cheaper option of family enclosure. I'm a maybe at this stage

I actually meant I didn't want to drive a minibus, I may have to drive to a meeting point or if we're not taking a minbus I wouldn't mind being a car driver

I know what you all meant! Thanks for the extra explanations anyway. Very Happy

The minibus driver is a great guy with lots of experience of driving minibuses and will stay with us all day.

As the Opening Post now says, we've booked the minibus today, so the trip is on!

Here are the details:-

7 seats on the bus available at £12 each, however if anyone prefers to make their own way there that's ok. Bus places will be reserved on a first come first served basis to members (walkers) only for the time being.
Family enclosure at £7 is the preferred option at the racecourse.

We will attempt to collect bus users from as many central pick up points as possible. These will probably include S8, S2, S1, S6, S5, S35, S9, S31, S26.

We will start picking up @ 9.30 and will hopefully be at Doncaster by 11.30. There will then be time to have a picnic or a look round behind the scenes before the first race starts at 1.0. The last race is at 5.0 after which we will leave Doncaster to have a meal somewhere on the way back.

Please add your name if you're interested.

Bumping this thread up a bit as it's gone a bit quiet. There are currently 7 places left on the minibus, and non-members are welcome to help fill the trip if anybody wants to bring a friend or a family member along. (Especially if they know how to spot a winner!)

Thankfully it didn't rain but it was mighty windy.

I didn't win anything, but I didn't bet anything so not out of pocket Smile  An enjoyable day none the less.

The food afterwards in the pub was very good.
