The Monsal Trail - Sunday 19th May

Post  Admin on Tue Apr 09, 2013 7:57 am

Sunday 19th May - The Monsal Trail
This is a linear walk of about 8 and a half miles which will take us from the starting point of the Monsal Trail at Bakewell, all the way through to where it currently ends at Blackwell Mill at Wyedale. Along the way we'll go through the four recently opened disused railway tunnels which have been renovated and illuminated to enable people to discover the breathtaking scenery at such places as Monsal Dale, Millers Dale and Chee Dale. There are also industrial relics such as Cressbrook Mill, Litton Mill and the Lime Kilns to be seen on the route as well as some impressive railway cuttings and viaducts.

As the finishing point isn't the same as the starting point we are going to arrange for all car drivers to be transported back to the start of the walk to collect their cars, once the walk is complete.

Details
Meet at Coombs Road Viaduct at 10.00 for 10.15 start. The viaduct is at the end of Coombs Road which runs parallel to Bakewell Showground. There is free on-street parking on Coombs Road near the viaduct.

If at all possible, can we have names down fairly early for this walk so that we can arrange lifts back for car drivers.
Andrea, Jean and me will be there.

You're welcome to come with us but we're setting off at 8.30 as we need to go to Blackwell Mill first to pick Chris up.

Another lovely walk today, it made a nice change to have no hills. 11 miles and I feel no after effects...I even did some gardening when I got home, admittedly I had some beer as well Very Happy

From now on, I'm going to stop guessing mileages. In future I'm just going to say 6-12 miles and leave it at that! How on earth did an expected 8.5 end up at 11 pale

Here's a quote from the "official" Monsal Trail leaflet: The Monsal Trail is a traffic free route for walkers, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users through some of the Peak District’s most spectacular limestone dales. The trail runs along the former Midland Railway line for 8.5 miles between Blackwell Mill in Chee Dale, and Coombs Road at Bakewell.

Add 1/2 a mile at the end for the walk to the car park and we should have had a 9 mile walk today, but yet the GPS said 11 Question I give up!

As Andrea says, made a nice change today to have a relatively flat walk today - no hills, no stiles, no roads to cross and no mud. Unfortunately it was like walking on the M1 though. The last bit of the walk at Chee Dale was something special.

It did make a change from hills and mud. A big thanks to Steve and Chris who did the reccy on this and for sorting the lifts back to the starting point. It was nice to catch up with everyone Very Happy . I can't believe how many bikers there were today, most needed louder bells or air horns. To me it felt like 11 miles because my hips are aching.
I hope you like my photos. They are in the gallery so you will need to log in to view them 65

Nice photos Daz!

It was an interesting walk today, like another world inside those tunnels! Strange how cool it was. Also saw some beautiful flowers today and some stunning lime stone cliffs!

Thanks to Steve for leading this one and to Chris for taking the drivers back to their cars.

Very Happy

Nice pics Darren. We've just added ours to the Gallery too, and I've amended the album titles to include the name of the photographer.
