Good Friday Recce - Monsal Trail!

Post  Steve M on Sun Mar 24, 2013 9:50 am

Good Friday 29th March - Monsal Trail

Now here's something different. In fact you could say that it's a walk with a difference - it's a linear walk, and we don't know where it's going to end!

We've had a suggestion to do the Monsal Trail in it's entireity one Sunday now the tunnels have been opened up, but before we do so, we're doing a recce on Good Friday to check it out. As we're wanting to carry on to Buxton from the end of the trail we want to do the recce first to see exactly where we can catch the bus back from.

To start with the route will take us from Bakewell to Blackwell Mill, where the Monsal trail ends at a distance of 7 miles. This is the first place that we could stop the walk. Fairly unlikely though, as on a flat route we should be there in about 3 hours. More likely is that we'll carry on into Buxton via Deep Dale, The Midshires Way and Cowdale. This is approximately another 4 miles if we go all the way in to Buxton. If we do reach Buxton we'll then be grabbing a bite to eat somewhere before we catch the bus back to Bakewell.

Highlights of the Monsal Trail in order of when we reach them are Hassop, Monsal Head, Cressbrook Mill, Litton Mill, Millers Dale and Chee Dale - quite a line up!

So if you fancy coming along and helping us with the route, and to plan the future Sunday walk, you'll be more than welcome!

Details

Meet at Bakewell station, Station Road, Bakewell DE45 1GE at 10.0 for 10.15 start. The walk is more or less flat throughout, on good shale paths for the most part with just a small amount of roadwalking near the end, and could be 11/12 miles long and take 5-7 hours + the bus journey

Andrea and me will be on this walk, and Jean too. 11 miles is further than we normally walk, but we did more than 12 (accidentally!) last Sunday with a load of ascent included, so anyone who was on the Dove Dale walk should be able to manage a flat(ish) 11(ish) miler no problem. Smile

Not sure "weather" we will be with you or not on Friday, but I have had a look at the bus service from Buxton and they are few and far between. However there is one that runs about 15.37 and the next is at 16.37 and takes 35 mins to get to Bakewell, just thought I would look in case we made it. Hope to see you Thursday and if so will bring you the print out. Smile

I'm not sure which bus you're looking at but the 218 service that I found leaves Buxton at 14.00 and 17.00 on Bank Holidays.

I've found it as well, it's called the Transpeak, runs from Manchester to Derby, think it's more
of a coach than a bus but does the job. It's an hourly service from Buxton that leaves at approx
40 minutes past the hour from the Market Place

Flipping heck, a walk and a half that was! Great experience though, especially the bits of the Monsal Trail I'd never been on before. Some good laughs negotiating the snow drifts. One minute, there was no snow, the next we were climbing 4-5 foot to get over them. Hopefully there'll be some photos to show how it was later.
