Castleton and Peak Forest - 31st March

Post  Steve M on Thu Feb 14, 2013 9:36 am

Sunday 31st March - Castleton and Peak Forest
Quite a strenuous 10 mile walk mainly over fields and ancient bridleways between Castleton and the village of Peak Forest. Along the way we'll take the riverside path out of Castleton towards Peak Cavern, and pass Eldon Quarries before returning to the start via the impresive limestone gorge of Cave Dale. The walk should take about 5 and a half hours and there is a total ascent of 500 metres.

Details
Meet at the information centre car park in Castleton, S33 8WN at 10.0 for 10.15 start.

If anybody fancies having a meal in Castleton after the walk can they please post by tomorrow night (Monday) so I can try and book us in somewhere. Bearing in mind that it's Easter Sunday, this might not be as easy as it sounds, which is why I need definite numbers for tomorrow.

You don't generally want "I can't make it" responses but I am genuinely sorry I can't make this walk and meal, I hope you all have a lovely time

Myself and Anne are leading the walk, but don't want the meal.
The walk takes us up a steep hill over looking Cave Dale along to Old Dam, Peak Forest before returning via Treak Cliff Cavern into Castleton

I would love to join you for the walk tomorrow and can offer a lift for anyone from the Crookes area. Are there any free parking places in Castleton or does it have to be the car park?

We've got room in our car if you want a lift tomorrow. We could meet you at rivelin cafe just after 9 if you want. We're staying behind for a meal if you want to join us too.

What a dirty woman I'm married to Surprised . Andrea can't just fall down in the mud once, she has to do it three times. All that snow to fall down in too, and she has to give it a miss and do some serious wallowing Rolling Eyes .

An unbelievable walk this one, especially with the deep snow all around us, and I've got to say that I've not laughed so much in years at some of the antics today. I never had Darren as a sheepman until today either Very Happy

I don't think that there's a part of me that's not aching, but it was well worth the effort. Thanks Anne and Robert for leading us so well and to Andrea for making me laugh so much. Smile

Cheers Steve, glad you enjoyed the walk. The snow was unbelievable, who would have thought we could walk along a barbed wire fence.
Plenty of laughs along the way special thanks to Andrea, sorry for laughing so much.

Well what a glorious walk that was & i do hope we do it again in summer. A big thank you to Ann & Rob for leading it & it was lovely to catch up with you both. I haven't giggled so much in ages and there was so many sheepish remarks lol. It was also nice to catch up with every one else. I think we have a really nice walking group here thumb
The meal at the George was very yummy, i may have over done it with the dessert lol.

I hope you enjoy my photos. The best one for me was number 28, see what you think lol.

I only go walking to keep you lot amused bliss
I would have loved to have been able to stand up for longer than 20 seconds without ending up laid out in the mud flat I washed all my clothes and thankfully the mud came off, I only wish I had got some on my face... I could have ended up looking 10 years younger Very Happy
Darren and the flock of sheep will be something that I will never forget.
What a great walk, we will have to do it again when theres less mud.

Really glad we made the effort to go on this walk. The scenery was stunning with the snow, I've never seen snow drifts like that before and walking above where fences should be was a weird experience!

Thanks to Anne and Rob for leading the walk, and to Steve for organising the meal afterwards. The George in Castleton is a great place!

Those sheep did seem to recognise Darren didn't they, looks like I've got some competition lol

Thanks to everyone for such a fun day!

Great photos there Darren, no 22 sums the day up I think!

Perhaps someone can remind me in a couple of months to stick this walk back on the agenda?

Fantastic walk. brilliant weather. Thanks Ann and Rob.
For some strange reason I can't see Darren's photos. All I get is a set of footprints, no sheep though.
